Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is building a green vehicle workshop, the largest of its kind in the region, at an estimated cost of AED 98 million. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA visited the construction site of the vehicle workshop in Al Ruwayyah, Dubai.

The new workshop will replace the current workshop in Ras Al Khor. It has been designed according to the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) criteria of the US Green Building Council Institute. The visit is part of the field visits by Al Tayer to check on the progress of the major projects DEWA is carrying out.

Al Tayer reviewed the progress of the workshop’s construction of buildings and facilities. He stressed the importance of adhering to the highest standards of security and safety across all aspects of work, in accordance with DEWA’s strategy to adopt the highest standards of security and safety in all its projects.

“This important project is part of DEWA’s operational plan and supports the future increase of its fleet of vehicles. This is part of our strategy to protect the environment, we made sure this workshop is built according to green-building standards. DEWA places great importance on the environment inall its projects, whether to produce electricity and water, or in its day-to-day operations. This supports our commitment to the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve the sustainable development of Dubai and establish the Emirate as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, and green economy. It also supports DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable world-class utility,” said Al Tayer.

“The new vehicle workshop adds to DEWA’s Sustainable Building in Al Quoz, which is the first sustainable government building in the UAE and the largest government building in the world with a Platinum rating for green buildings. The vehicle workshop adopts the latest international technologies to conserve electricity and water consumption. DEWA has followed the highest sustainability standards in construction, selection of material, and operations of the workshop. This supports our strategy to achieve the sustainable development of Dubai and achieve a better future, for generations to come,” added Al Tayer.

DEWA owns a fleet of 3,330 different types of vehicle. This includes light and heavy vehicles, drilling equipment, and other special equipment. The total area of the vehicle workshop is 280,761 square feet. It includes a workshop for light and heavy vehicles, and special equipment. It is equipped with the latest equipment and machines, with an accident repair workshop, paint shop, washing area, auto car wash, management office, and spare parts stores. The workshop uses the latest sustainable technologies for lighting, air conditioning, and water use. Around 75% of the project has been completed and finalised by end of March 2015.
